tongue in cheek

Tiffany Lambert

We laugh, we joke, we use sarcasm to lighten the mood. We speak life, yet sadly, we also speak death.

Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue is also a fire, a world of evil among parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire.
— James 3:5-6

Now, the bible is explicit about this, but we often overlook it. No big deal, it’s just idle chatter. What does it really hurt? Your tongue or your Facebook status, for modern day purposes, is not just some meaningless tool for brute communication-it wields a great power.

With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?
— James 3:9-11

Ask yourself:

What  is the message I am communicating?

What am I speaking over the people around me?

What am I speaking over myself?

If you are constantly speaking out or thinking judgement, negativity, & criticism over yourself, guess what? Pretty soon those things will become true, because you will start to believe them.

Join me in speaking life. I don’t want to keep up this dichotomy. I want to live a life worthy and pleasing to God. I want life and not death, and I want that for others. Because when I speak tongue in cheek, it’s not all fun and games- someone gets hurt.
